Dr. Zapata works with student development, health, and wellness programs in the division. She is responsible for the oversight and management of the following units: Career Development Center; Counseling Center and Prevention Services; Fraternity and Sorority Life; Military and Veteran Services; ROTC; Student Conduct; Student Health Services; Student Legal Services; Student Media; and University Recreation.

Bret Smith

Interim Dean of University College
Senior Associate Dean
Professor Bret Smith currently serves as the Interim Dean of University College in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs. Prior to taking his position at N.C. State, he served as Associate Director of University College and the Director of Interdisciplinary Studies at Auburn University, and as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the College of Architecture Design and Construction, where he oversaw undergraduate programs, curriculum development, academic advising, international programs and recruiting. During this time, he served as chair of the Auburn University Academic Advising Career Ladder Committee for two years. Professor Smith has a B.S. IED, an M.A. in English and an M.A. In Industrial Design, all from Purdue University.


Katie Graham

Assistant Dean and Director of Academic Support Programs for Student Athletes

Katie’s responsibilities include oversight of Case Academic Center and staff which provide academic support services to all NC State Student Athletes. She also serves as the department’s liaison to the Admissions office and leads the APR and GSR collection and reporting process.

Justin Hammond

Director, Marketing and Communications

Justin is responsible for the marketing and communication efforts of the division. In addition, he directs website strategy, branding, and advertising. He also manages and oversees communication for the vice chancellor and dean as well as supervising the RED-i student creative services group which provides marketing and communications support for student groups on campus.

Justine Hollingshead

Justine Hollingshead

Chief of Staff and Assistant Vice Chancellor
Justine serves as the Chief of Staff working in close collaboration with and supporting the Division’s various functional areas. This role also serves as a key liaison with campus regarding crisis response, postvention efforts, emergency planning, off-campus outreach, and large-scale event facilitation. She monitors responses to issues that range from high profile and strategic to the routine.

Rich Holly

Associate Dean and Executive Director for the Arts
Rich serves as the Associate Dean and Executive Director for the Arts, which is comprised of the Crafts Center, the Dance Program, the Gregg Museum of Art and Design, the Music Department, NC State LIVE, and University Theatre. Arts NC State provides coursework, exhibitions, programming, outreach experiences and other opportunities to students of all majors as well as numerous community members.

Dr. Carrie McLean

Assistant Dean and Director of Advising Services

Dr. Carrie McLean is responsible for the administrative oversight of the Exploratory Studies Program and directs campus-wide academic advising services for students in transition and for advisor training and development. Working collaboratively with the University Academic Advising Committee, McLean coordinates activities and personnel to ensure that an effective, proactive, and responsive approach is prescribed to meet the diverse range of advising and advisor needs.  She also assists the senior associate dean in the preparation and implementation of division strategic initiatives and analyzes existing policies and programs to recommend goals for continuous program improvement.

Barry Olson

Dr. Barry Olson

Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Administration
Dr. Olson is responsible for the oversight and management of areas including Finance, Facilities Planning and Management, Technology Services, Human Resources, and University Housing. DASA is responsible for approximately $100 million of funds, roughly 520 full-time employees, and approximately 3.5 million square feet of space.

Nicole Peterson

Executive Director, Development
Nicole works with alumni, parents and friends on charitable investments benefiting our students, faculty, and programs. Nicole and her development team work with donors on donations of all sizes from modest annual gifts to legacy gifts such as will bequests. Her office also coordinates volunteer efforts, including the management of two volunteer boards.

Dr. Carrie Zelna

Associate Vice Chancellor

Dr. Zelna provides leadership for the DASA academic success programs including eight pathways programs (Six TRIO programs, Juntos, College Advising Corps) and three success programs (New Student Programs, University Tutorial Center, Disability Resource Office).  In addition, Dr. Zelna provides leadership for the Rural Works! Program which serves under-resourced counties in North Carolina and serves as the Director of the DASA Office of Assessment that serves all DASA units, undergraduate academic programs, General Education and the SACS QEP.
