Step-by-Step Help Topics
Follow these instructions for various help topics to help you succeed at NC State
I am having trouble with a particular class
Follow these steps if you’re having trouble with a class
- Communicate with your instructor. Use their office hours when possible to get clarification on material, review missed questions, and get advice on how to prepare better for the next assignment/test. In addition to instructors and TAs, there are often additional support resources available. Check with your instructor or TA to see what other resources might be available.
- If you still aren’t able to connect with the faculty member, reach out to the Chair/Head of the faculty members’ department. You can find a list of all department heads on the provost’s website.
- If you don’t hear from any of the above, contact the college’s dean’s office for that academic department.
- The student ombuds’ office is a neutral party to discuss and clarify concerns, identify resources, and help resolve problems.
- PRO TIP: Try more than one resource at the same time.
Additional resources
- Instructor and/or TA Office Hours (located on the syllabus). Office hours are times when you can meet with your professors and teaching assistants to discuss material being presented in class or other related interests you have. Read here for ideas on how to use office hours effectively.

I feel disconnected from my department, degree program, and/or faculty
Each college at NC State works a little differently. You can keep up with their current programs and events via their college’s websites. Outside of the college make sure you are keeping in touch with your classmates and other students in your program of study. The study buddies tool in GPS can help you connect with other students in your class.
